Power Distribution Pole Product Overview

distribution poleValmont® Utility is one of the world’s largest providers of high-quality steel poles for power distribution applications. We design, manufacture and galvanize distribution poles in-house, at one of dozens of Valmont production and coating facilities located around the world.

With even uniformity and outstanding durability, Valmont Utility steel distribution poles offer customers a superior alternative to wood distribution poles. Our steel poles are designed to meet the same ANSI 05.1 height and class requirements as wood poles when the load factor is in accordance with the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).

Steel Distribution Poles Provide Many Advantages Over Wood Poles:

Dramatically Lower Pole Weight

Weighing approximately 50-70% less than comparable wood structures, steel power distribution poles are easier and less expensive to handle and install.

Exceptional Ease-of-Installation

Valmont Utility steel distribution poles can be pre-drilled upon request to accommodate special customer framing requirements. Most existing distribution pole hardware can easily be used on these steel structures. Due to the lighter weight of steel, and the convenience of pre-drilling, steel distribution poles can be installed much faster than their wood counterparts.

Uniform Material Strength for Consistent, Reliable Performance

Valmont Utility steel distribution poles provide a constant taper without wood twists, knots, splits or sweep, while providing uniform diameters. Hardware is standard and always fits. Steel also has uniform material strength throughout the entire structure, providing more consistent and predictable results than wood.

Consistent Deflection Characteristics

Valmont Utility distribution poles are designed to have similar deflection characteristics to Douglas fir wood poles.

Design Flexibility – Custom-Engineered Distribution Poles

As a standard, steel poles are direct embedded. In special situations, such as rock anchor, base poles can be provided. Furthermore, steel poles can be custom-engineered and fabricated to support larger and heavier loadings with longer spans than traditional wood poles. Also, when required, steel can be designed for greater height requirements than wood.

Proven Corrosion Protection for Long-Life Distribution Pole Performance

A variety of steel finishes are available, including galvanized, paint over galvanized (powder coat or liquid), dulled and darkened galvanizing, and weathering steel. For direct embedded steel poles, Valmont Utility offers the TriFORCE™ coating system, which provides unsurpassed corrosion protection just above and below grade (ground level). The product innovation combines a proper duplex coating system with an advanced application process that creates an exceptionally high level of defense to combat corrosion.

Performance Reliability

Every Valmont Utility steel distribution pole is designed to meet minimum yield strength, not mean rupture strength. Steel poles will withstand loads both now and in the future, and will not rot and degrade like wood.

Steel Distribution Poles Provide Maintenance Savings

After installing steel poles, there's no need to re-tighten hardware later due to pole shrinkage. Steel retains its shape and strength and is not susceptible to damage by woodpeckers, insects, rot or fires. There is no expensive inspection and toxic treatment programs necessary after the installation of steel poles.

Steel Poles Are a Safe Solution

The steel structures do not require a full-length copper grounding wire. They are self-conducting for grounding purposes. Provisions for grounding are provided on each pole, and pre-drilling for removable safety steps is available.

A Smart Choice for the Environment

Steel poles from Valmont Utility steel are an answer to EPA regulations and deforestation issues. The poles are non-toxic, which reduce disposal problems and costs, and they can be reused or recycled.

Ease of Procurement

Lead time is short and predictable with our steel poles, and there are no costly pre-shipment inspections.
